What is the Center for Urban History?

The Center for Urban History is the name of this website. The Center is based around the activities of the Urban Historical Society, which has been active since its founding in 1990, and was established and is operated through the collaborative research of the following two grant-in-aid projects:

2006-2011 Basic Grant-in-Aid, Category S, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science “Comparative Study of the Segmental Socio-Spatial Structures of Traditional Cities, 1500-1900”

Goals of the Center for Urban History

1. Quickly publish and broadly share the results of our joint research through these two grants-in aid.
2. Follow research trends in urban history as carried out in Japan and share this information with others.
3. Make the results of urban history research carried out in Japan accessible to researchers overseas.
4. Smooth share the results of urban history research conducted abroad.

The Urban Historical Society oversees management of the Center for Urban History, whose activities are run from the following two locations:
